UCAN Advisory Group
Led by our chief patron, provides ongoing advice to the Board on all aspects of our work, especially fundraising.
This group acts as an advisory body, meeting regularly with the Board and the Executive Team to advise on fundraising strategy and events, strategic partnerships and governance issues.

Research Steering Group
Guides the research undertaken by UCAN, and keeps us abreast of findings from studies carried out elsewhere.
The role of this Steering Group is crucial in ensuring that the research supported by UCAN will make a difference to the quality of life of patients and their families. It must also ensure that this research is of the highest standard.

Mananging Director - Upstream, Centrica Energy
Jonathan has over 20 years' experience in the oil and gas industry. The first 12 years with Conoco and ConocoPhillips in the North Sea and SE Asia in a variety of technical and management roles. In 2003 Jonathan joined UK independent Venture Production plc to lead the company's North Sea gas business and was later promoted to the main Venture Production plc board as Chief Operating Officer. Following the takeover of Venture in 2009 by Centrica, and the integration of the two companies, Jonathan became Managing Director of the new business, Centrica Energy Upstream (CEU). CEU has significant interests in the UK, Norway, Netherlands and Trinidad and Tobago, and recently announced plans to grow the business by a further 50%, which it's already well on the way to achieving.
Jonathan is on the Board of Oil and Gas UK and is a member of PILOT (a joint industry and government task force) where he is currently leading the team tasked with extending the life of the countries offshore infrastructure to maximise reserves recovery.

Chairman and CEO, John Wood Group
Born and educated in Aberdeen, Ian Wood graduated from Aberdeen University in 1964 with a First Class Honours Degree in Psychology. He joined the family business, John Wood & Son, and became Managing Director in 1967. The Company has since then evolved into two independent Scottish business groups: John Wood Group PLC is the UK's largest energy services company and J W Holdings, one of the largest fishing companies in Scotland.
Sir Ian holds many appointments within the UK. He has been awarded an Honorary Degree of LL.D from Aberdeen University and was awarded a Knighthood in the 1994 New Year's Honours List.
Sir Ian has supported UCAN from its creation in 2005 and helped the charity re-launch a new media campaign in February 2007. |

President of the General Medical Council
Graeme Catto is President of the General Medical Council and Professor of Medicine, University of Aberdeen. Until 2005, he was Vice-Principal at King's College London, Dean of the Guy's, King's College and St. Thomas' Hospitals' Medical & Dental School and Pro-Vice Chancellor, University of London. After graduating in Medicine, he obtained a Harkness Fellowship to study at Harvard University. He is an honorary physician with an interest in renal medicine and has published widely on different aspects of nephrology and immunology. Formerly Chief Scientist at the Scottish Executive Health Department, he is currently a member of the Council for Healthcare Regulatory Excellence.
Married to a lawyer, Graeme Catto has two children, three grandchildren and two English setters. He enjoys the hills and glens of Scotland. |
Chartered Surveyor, Grandholme House
David Romer Paton OBE is by profession a chartered surveyor and a Fellow of the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors. He held a number of senior professional appointments before setting up his own single-handed practice in 1989. David Paton is also the owner of Grandhome estate where he was born, and which has been in the Paton family since the 1673. He was educated at Gordonstoun School and Keble College, Oxford. He has been held position in a number of other health initiatives including a post as Chairman of the Grampian Cancer Care Project and Chairman of the Grampian Epilepsy Association of Scotland. He is currently president of the Aberdeen Committee for MacMillan Cancer Relief. |
Principal and Vice Chancellor, University of Aberdeen
Professor C Duncan Rice has been Principal and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Aberdeen since September 1996. He was previously Dean of the Faculty (1985-91), and Vice-Chancellor (1991-96) at New York University, playing a key role in one of the most successful US higher education fund-raising campaigns.
Professor Rice was born in Aberdeen, and took a first in history at the University of Aberdeen in 1964. He taught briefly at Aberdeen and completed an Edinburgh doctorate before spending much of his professional life at Yale and New York University.
Professor Rice has published widely as a professional historian. He is the recipient of many academic awards and honours, including Honorary Degrees from New York University and Robert Gordon University, an Honorary Fellowship from the UHI Millennium Institute, and fellowships at Harvard and Yale, as well as being a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh.
Professor Rice is married to Susan Rice, the Chief Executive of Lloyds TSB Scotland. They have three children and live in Old Aberdeen. His interests include hillwalking, contemporary Scottish literature, and opera. |
Retired Urologist
 John Steyn is a graduate of Cape Town University. He was Consultant in Administrative Charge in The Department of Urology at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary from 1969 until 1993. He was a Founder Member and Past Chairman of the Scottish Urological Society and a Founder Member of the European Urological Society. He is also a Member of the International Society of Urology and an Honorary Member of the South African Urological Society. He was formerly Chairman and Treasurer of the Editorial Board of the British Journal of Urology, Treasurer of the British Association of Urological Surgeons and Treasurer of The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. He lives in Aberdeen, enjoying retirement with his wife. A number of his family are doctors and he maintains an interest in Urology.

Solicitor, Aberdeen
Mrs Anne Scott is a solicitor by profession, involved initially in maritime law. She later specialised in taxation legislation, becoming a partner in Ernst and Young. She is currently a Consultant with Mackinnons, Solicitors. Anne sits on various Tribunals across Scotland and is Board Member of Aberdeen harbour Board. She has been a non-executive director of a number of local companies, a past Governor and Vice Chairman of Governors of The Robert Gordon University, and for nine years was a member of the Board of Aberdeen Royal Hospitals NHS Trust (and its successor body.) Anne is also a Trustee of the Roland Sutton Academic Radiology Trust. |
Aberdeen City Council
 John Reynolds was unanimously appointed Lord Provost between 2003-2007and has served as a Liberal Democrat councillor in Aberdeen for 20 years. He represents the Oldmachar Ward in Bridge of Don. Born in Blackpool, Lancashire he came to work in Aberdeen in 1969 when he met his wife Helen. His career has been in the entertainment industry, retail management, tourism and newspaper distribution.During his period as Lord Provost he was passionate about promoting the city and enhancing its prosperity, playing a key role in supporting companies opening up new trade links throughout the world. He has been awarded an honorary professorship by the Marat Ospanov West Kazakhstan State Medical Academy in recognition of further Kazhak relations. His interests include his Christian faith and he has been awarded the OstJ. He and his wife also raise funds for a number of charities.

Cytosystems Ltd
Richard is a Life Science graduate of the University of Aberdeen.
Having worked with Professor John Mallard's company which was set up to commercialise the University of Aberdeen's innovative work on Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), Richard subsequently went on to work for Scottish Enterprise Grampian where he was involved in many aspects of economic development including assisting local technology based companies to start, raise capital, and grow their businesses through innovation and internationalisation.
Richard returned to the private sector early in 2007 as Chief Executive of Cytosystems Ltd - an Aberdeen based company set up specifically to develop advanced diagnostic tests for cancer. In collaboration with Cancer Research Technology (CRT), the company's first diagnostic product under development is a non-invasive, urine based, test for bladder cancer.
