PETERHEAD RUNNERS SUPPORT UCAN
A Peterhead couple, who took part in the Olympic Torch Relay earlier this month, have organised a set of fundraising races in aid of North-east urological cancer charity UCAN.
Stephen and Roselyn Bruce of Peterhead – who carried the torch through Drumoak when it arrived in Aberdeenshire – have set up 3, 6 and 10k fun runs on Wednesday June 27, 2012, to raise much needed funds for the charity, which has recently helped a close friend suffering from prostate cancer.
Stephen, who is Chairman of jogscotland Peterhead said: "At the end of each 10-week block of jogscotland meets, we organise a charity fun run for all members, which we also open up to the public. The response has always been great and we sometimes get up to 200 people taking part.
"We have a friend who has been undergoing treatment for prostate cancer and he and his family have been grateful for the support they have received from UCAN. For us, it means a lot that we can show support to both the charity and our friend at the same time.
"All those taking part should simply come along and register on the night at Peterhead Football Club from 6-6.30pm, and they can choose whether they walk, jog or run. Everyone will receive a Golden Jubilee Medal for their efforts."
Stephen (51) and Roselyn (50) have also promised that their Olympic Torches will make an appearance at some point on the night, and that all profits will go to the UCAN Robotically-Assisted Surgical System (RASS) Campaign.
UCAN is currently spearheading this fundraising campaign to raise £2.5million to purchase Scotland's first Robotically-Assisted Surgical System (RASS) and an operating theatre suite for Aberdeen Royal Infirmary (ARI), which would initially be used for urological, gynaecological and general surgery. Considered to be the future for surgical procedures, the robotically-assisted keyhole surgical system is a powerful and highly advanced tool that enables precision and intricate surgery to be carried out speeding up operating times and recovery rates for patients.
UCAN's fundraising manager Fiona JD Pearson said: "Our current fundraising challenge is to raise enough money to bring this very latest technology for robotically-assisted keyhole surgery to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary, and to build two new integrated operating theatres to house the system, which will benefit everyone in the North-east of Scotland who requires a specialised operation in the future.
"Every donation helps towards our fundraising goal so we are extremely grateful to event organisers, Stephen and Roselyn, as well as everyone who will participate in the Peterhead fun runs, for choosing to support UCAN and this campaign."
