FUN DAY OUT IN INVERURIE TO RAISE MONEY FOR UCAN
Event organised in memory of Inverurie man
Inverurie's Market Green is to host a family fun day this weekend to help raise money for North-east urological cancer charity, UCAN.
The fun day will be held this Sunday, June 3 from 11am to 4pm and there will be entertainment for all the family with bouncy castles and inflatables, face-painting, beat the goalie and lots of food and craft stalls – as well as a special appearance by Aberdeen Football Club mascot, Angus the Bull.
All the money raised at the event will be donated to UCAN's latest fundraising campaign to raise £2.5million to purchase Scotland's first Robotically-Assisted Surgical System (RASS), for Aberdeen Royal Infirmary, which would be used not only for urological surgery but also for gynaecological and general surgery.
The family fun day is free to attend and is being organised by Dodie's Fundraising Foundation, which was set up in memory of George (Dodie) Nicholson who died suddenly in 2010 following an accident.
George, a mechanic, lived in Newmachar for many years before moving to Inverurie.
His widow Margaret Nicholson, who is organising the event, believes UCAN is a very worthy cause and is looking forward to a great day out for all the family.
"After George passed away his family and friends got together and came up with the idea of creating a foundation to raise money for good causes in his memory," she said.
"We believe UCAN's latest campaign to bring robotically- assisted surgical equipment to the North-east is something which could benefit many people and have decided that the charity will be the beneficiary of a series of events we are running in the next few months.
"We'd like to invite as many people as possible along on Sunday as it is going to be a great day out for all and will give you the chance to help raise money for a super cause."
Fiona JD Pearson, UCAN's Fundraising Manager, added: "A huge thank you to Margaret and Dodie's Fundraising Foundation team for choosing to support UCAN, and for all their fundraising efforts.
"Our current fundraising challenge is to raise enough money to fund the purchase of Scotland's first Robotically-Assisted Surgical System (RASS) for Aberdeen Royal Infirmary, plus two new integrated operating theatres to house the system. Robotically-assisted surgery is the best and most advanced technology currently available for minimally invasive (keyhole) surgery and will greatly benefit patients in the North of Scotland including Orkney and Shetland in the future."
