UCAN Research Team

 

The UCAN research team is based at the Academic Urology Unit, of the University of Aberdeen.

Moira Cruickshank

Moira CruickshankMoira returned to full-time education at the University of Aberdeen in 2002, following a career in the police. She graduated with a BSc Psychology (1st class honours) in 2006 and an MRes Psychology (distinction) in 2007. She then gained funding from UCAN for a 3-year PhD entitled "Using psychological theory to explore patients' treatment choices in the context of urological cancer". Moira's main research interests involve using, and adapting, established theory-based approaches to explore situations where people must choose between behavioural alternatives to give a more complete account of the actual behaviour chosen. Moira is currently in the writing-up year of her PhD.

 
Mari Imamura

Mari ImamuraDr Mari Imamura completed a PhD in sociolinguistics from the University of Aberdeen, investigating primary school teachers' attitudes towards the Scots language in the North East of Scotland. She then worked for the Dugald Baird Centre for Research on Women's Health (2004-2005), the Initiative for Maternal Mortality Programme Assessment (IMMPACT) (2005-2006) and the Health Services Research Unit (2006-2008), all at the University of Aberdeen. During this time she gained experience in systematic reviews, including those commissioned by the UK Health Technology Assessment programme. Dr Imamura joined the UCAN research team in 2008 to work as systematic reviewer.

 
Karolina Kazimierczak
KarolinaKazimierczakDr Karolina Kazimierczak joined the UCAN research team in 2009 to work on the Plain English Guides (PEG) Project. She is a graduate of the Institute of Applied Social Sciences, University of Warsaw, and holds a PhD degree from the Department of Sociology, Lancaster University. She is a researcher and also works as a teaching assistant in the Department of Sociology. As a cultural sociologist and a qualitative researcher, Karolina is interested in the relationship between medical knowledge, its popular interpretations, and lay understandings of health and illness.
 
Sara Jane MacLennan
Sara_MaclennanDr Sara MacLennan is Director of Operations for UCAN (Urological CANcer charity), member of the UCAN research team and a Senior Lecturer. Sara has a PhD in health psychology. She is an Associate Fellow of the British Psychological Society, and a registered health psychologist. Sara joined UCAN in 2008. Her research is focussed on two areas of applied health psychology: adjustment to chronic illness, especially in relation to chronic illness and to working life, and reproductive health and behaviour. Currently her research is focussed on behaviour in relation to a specific chronic illness, urological cancer. Her programmes of work and those of her team are focused on early diagnosis and urological cancer; the management of work and working life and urological cancer and the specific information and support needs of those diagnosed with a urological cancer. She is also involved in research into the methods and techniques used for empirical study in the social sciences. Her research is well published and she has spoken at both national and international conferences.
 
Steven MacLennan
Steven_MacLennanDr Steven MacLennan joined the UCAN research team as a Macmillan funded Research Fellow in the systematic review team in October 2009. He is currently involved in a number of systematic reviews of surgical and non-surgical interventions in differing stages of urological cancers. Prior to this, Steven completed a PhD in sociology from the University of Edinburgh, whilst also working with Baccus Consulting Ltd. providing research assistance doing primary research, literature reviews and monitoring reports in public health areas. Before this, Steven completed a postgraduate Master of Research degree and an undergraduate honours degree in Applied Social Sciences
 
Chifundo Madziamodzi Makuta
ChifundoMakutaMr. Chifundo Madziamodzi Makuta is working as research Nurse in the UCAN research team. His academic qualifications include Master of Public Health (South Africa), Bachelor of Science (BSc) degree in Nursing and Nursing Education (University of Malawi); Diploma in Nursing and the University Certificate in Midwifery (University of Malawi). Other related work experience include: clinical teaching and classroom teaching in Nursing science education both in Malawi and Botswana (Africa); Clinical Nursing work (Aberdeen, Scotland UK) in NHS Grampian (ARI) and Private Care sectors. His academic vision is to pursue PhD in International Public Health Policy.
 
Debbie Munro
BlankProfileMrs Debbie Munro is a registered General Nurse who has 24 years experience within various specialities including eight years in urology. She has recently joined the UCAN research team and in addition to being involved in various research projects she provides information and support to patients with urological cancer at the UCAN Centre.
 
Muhammad Imran Omar
Imran OmarDr Muhammad Imran Omar is a medical doctor registered with the General Medical Council UK and Pakistan Medical and Dental Council. He is an ECFMG USA certified physician and has cleared United States Medical Licensing Examinations. He completed MSc in Health Services and Public Health Research from the University of Aberdeen and has fulfilled the requirement of post-graduate diploma in Medical Education from the University of Dundee. He has extensive teaching and research experience and has worked in the UK, USA, Pakistan and the Caribbean. Dr. Omar joined the UCAN research team in October 2009 and is working on various systematic reviews.
 
Linda Pennet
BlankProfileMrs Linda Pennet is a Urology Specialist Nurse who has 37 years experience in various medical specialties within Aberdeen Royal Infirmary. The last 10 years within the Urology department in Specialist nursing roles including Research Nurse. For the last 3 years she has been part of the UCAN team. She is responsible for co-ordinating the activity of the UCAN Care Centre which includes the support and information needs of the urology cancer patient, and their families. Linda is working on various systematic reviews with the academic team.
 
Lesley Simpson
BlankProfileMs. Lesley Simpson finished her training as an Enrolled Nurse in 1982. She worked in several wards following her training including Dental and Oncology (the old Ward 6, ARI) for approximately one year, Dental and Oncology theatre (Theatre 'C', non-existent now) for approximately one year. She then went to Ward 26 (old medical ward for Respiratory) for approximately a year. Following that she went to work in Ward 44 for over twenty years until she retired in 2008. Lesley has worked in UCAN since May 2008. In 1990 she did conversion course to be a Staff Nurse, by then it was a degree course in Higher Nursing Studies for which she obtained with distinction.
 
Zoë Skea
ZoeSkeaDr. Zoë Skea joined the University of Aberdeen as a Research Assistant in 1999. She graduated in Sociology from the University of Glasgow in 1995 and gained an MSc in Health Services and Public Health Research from the University of Aberdeen in 1999. Since joining the university, she has been involved in a broad range of studies with a particular focus on health care users' experiences of their own care and treatment. She gained a PhD in 2006 and is now a Research Fellow. In 2008, she took up a joint appointment with the UCAN research team and the Health Services Research Unit with overall responsibility for the development of the Patient Focused Urological Cancer Information Programme.
 
Kevin Wardlaw
BlankProfileMr. Kevin Wardlaw has been qualified a nurse since 1989 and is working as a Macmillan Clinical Nurse Specialist in Uro-Oncology. He has worked in urology since 1991 and his current post started in 2003. He is also in final year of MSc in Nurse led practice at Robert Gordon University. His present post primarily involves providing support and advice to patients with a diagnosis or potential diagnosis of urological cancers and side effects of cancer treatment. Part of his role includes co-ordination of the prostate assessment clinic which is a diagnostic clinic for men with potential cancer. He also performs diagnostic endoscopy (flexible cystoscopy) for patients with urinary symptoms. His special interest is in men with prostate cancer with all stages of the disease and he runs a follow up clinic for men with prostate cancer who require long term follow up of their disease. Part of his role also involves streamlining patient care pathways to enable the urology service to provide quality care and treatment of patients with urological cancer in line with Government policy requirements.
